Please note that we do not accept oral requests and do not provide hotel reservation or other services without receiving payment in advance.

Answer1. VISAS
Do not attempt to enter Russia before the entry date printed on your visa. Do not leave Russia after the visa has expired. Be sure to register your visa within 72 hours of entering the Russian Federation. Lost/expired visas can be replaced, but it is a lengthy and complex procedure and heavy fines can be levied. You will NOT be allowed to leave Russia without a visa.
2. PERSONAL SAFETY
Be vigilant at all times. Dress down and dont draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Keep expensive items of jewellery, cameras, watches etc out of sight. Take special care on trains, at train stations and on public transport, where theft is common. Do keep a separate record of your passport details and of the visa. Do keep your valuables - cash, credit cards, passport, visa and travel documents - in a safe place. If valuables are stolen inform the militia (police) and obtain a report.
3. MONEY
Do bring enough funds with you for your stay and onward/return journeys. Bank transfers are possible but take time. Cash is best taken as US Dollars it is best to take new, clean notes. Travellers Cheques can be difficult to change. Credit cards tend to be accepted only in large hotels and supermarkets, and in large cities only. You can withdraw currency from most ATMs in Moscow and other major cities with a credit card and some UK/EU-issued debit cards.
Money should only be exchanged at banks or recognised kiosks. It is illegal to buy currency from street traders, and you are more likely to be conned.
4. THE LAW
Drinking ANY amount of alcohol and driving is illegal. Penalties are severe for carrying or using illegal drugs of any kind in however small quantities.
Police often check documents. Keep your passport and visa with you at all times for routine checks.
If you commit an offence, you must expect to face the consequences. If you are charged with a serious offence, insist on the British Consulate being informed.
5. MEDICAL MATTERS AND INSURANCE
You should have appropriate medical insurance to cover your entire stay in the case of an emergency. Many non-prescription medicines are widely available in major cities, but you should take any essential medication with you. Remember, some medicines available over the counter in the UK may be controlled in Russia.
Dont leave home without travel insurance. Ensure that you are fully covered not only for medical treatment/local hospitalisation and medical evacuation but also unexpected expenses such as costs incurred from overbooked flights. It is not unknown for travellers to spend some days waiting for onward flights.
Drinking water in some areas can be unsafe. Use only bottled water or boil tap water before drinking.
HIV/AIDS also exists in Russia, as do many other nasty STDs. Do not have unprotected sex.
6. NO-GO AREAS
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office strongly advise against travelling to the following areas:
The Chechen Republic, Ingushetia, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Eastern and southern parts of the Stavropol Krai (especially where it borders Chechnya)
